2. Types:

A. According to source of water: –

  1. Direct irrigation system or diverse scheme or river canal irrigation system.
  2. Storage Irrigation system or tank irrigation
  3. Combined irrigation system or diversion + storage system.

 

B. According to region where it is being used:

a. Flow Irrigation system:

  • Supply of irrigation water by the gravity flow.
  • May again be divided into perennial and inundation irrigation.

 

b. Perennial irrigation system:

  • Water required for irrigation is supplied according to the crop requirement throughout the crop period.
  • Weirs or barrages are required to store the excess water.

 

c. Inundation irrigation system.

  • Carried out by deep flooding and through saturation of the land to be cultivated which is then drained off prior to the planning of the crops.
