Advantages of Sprinkler system

  • Surface runoff is eliminated or minimized.
  • Erosion can be controlled.
  • Uniform application of water.
  • Reduced cost of land preparation.
  • More land available for cropping as borders and ditches are not required.
  • Small streams of irrigation can be used efficiently.
  • Crop damage from frost can be reduced.
  • Time and amount of fertilizer can be controlled.
  • Soluble herbicides and fungicides can be used with irrigation water.

 

Disadvantages of Sprinkler system

  • Energy requirement is high. (0.5-<7 kg pressure)
  • Wind may distort sprinkling pattern and affect the uniformity of distribution.
  • Pressure is high than necessary,
  • Costly method.
  • Formation of hard pan in soil may occur.
