About Lesson
Adaptability of furrow irrigation
- Can be used to irrigate all cultivated crops including orchards and vegetables.
- Suitable for crops having the risk of injury from ponded surface water or susceptible to fungal root rot.
- Suitable for most soils except sandy soil that have high IR and provide poor lateral distribution of water between furrows.
Advantages of furrow irrigation
- Furrows contain only ½ – 1/5th of the land surface thereby reducing puddling and crusting of soil and evaporation losses.
- Earlier cultivation is possible.
- Can be used on wide range of natural slopes without erosion.
- Reduces labor requirement in land preparation and irrigation.
- There is no wastage of land in field ditches.
Disadvantages of furrow irrigation
- High labor requirement
- Loss of water through deep percolation and runoff.
