T. ovis

Introduction

  • This species causes benign theileriosis in sheep and goats.
  • Erythrocyte forms and Koch bodies are similar to those of hirci in shape and size.
  • Schizonts are present only in the lymph nodes.
  • Tick vector: Rhipicephalus and Haemaphysalis
  • Almost non-pathogenic. Only signs are fever, swelling of lymph nodes in region of tick attachment and slight anemia.
  • Animals recovered from infection are premune.
  • Diagnosis is similar to hirci structural distinction is not possible differentiation between T. ovis and T. hirci  is only possible on the basis of scarcity of parasite and lack of severe pathogenicity.
  • Treatment unknown.
