About Lesson
Pond culture
- Water mass is maintained by artificially erected dike.
- Usually filled by rainfall, canal or spring water.
- May be extensive, intensive, semi-intensive, mono or polyculture.
Cage culture
- Defined as raising fish from juvenile stage to commercial size in a volume of water enclosed on all sides including bottom.
- Readily adapted to water areas which can’t be drained or otherwise harvested.
- The stocking density of 10 fingerlings/m3 is recommended.
- The average weight of fingerlings stocked varies from 15-25 g.
- Has following advantages:
I. Economic use of natural water resources which are unsuitable for other means of fish culture.
ii. removal of organic matter and nutrients accumulated in plankton as fish flesh.
iii. Low investment but high return.
iv. Easy prevention and control of fish disease and predators.
v. Easy harvest at desirable quantity within the stock, and time.
vi. At time of emergencies, cages can be removed from one place to another.
Silent features of fish for cage culture
- Natural ability to grow fast.
- Food habits adapted to types of organism living in or around the water bodies
- Ability to adapt to crowded conditions
- Controlled propagation
- Easy handling and harvest
- Tolerance of dissolved oxygen and temperature fluctuation.
- Eg: Carps, Tilapia, Trout, Catfishes, etc.
