Other types of cum fish farming

a. Horticulture-fish farming:

  • In one hectare pond area about 0.3-hectare land is available in shape where banana, papaya or citrus plants having low root system can be cultivated.
  • Leaves of fruits and vegetables can be used as a feed for fish while pond water can be used for irrigation and pond bottom soil can be used as a good fertilizer for the plantation.

b. Livestock-fish farming:

  • Main stoked fishes include common carp, Chinese and indigenous major carps and Nile tilapia.

c. Pig-fish farming:

  • Here, supplementary fertilization and feeding are not required to fish.
  • About 30% of the undigested feed is excreted in feces by pig which serves as direct food for fishes.
  • About 40-50 pigs are sufficient for fertilizing one hectare water area under fish culture.

d. Duck-fish farming:

  • The droppings of the ducks act as substitute for fish feed and pond fertilizers which accounts for 60% of the total input cost in fish culture.
  • The ducks also eat fish enemies like aquatic insects, tadpoles, mollusks, aquatic weeds, etc. which don’t form food for fish.
  • About 500-800 ducks are sufficient to fertilize one hectare pond area.
  • It is advisable to release fish fingerlings of more than 10 cm size.
  • The reported number of fingerlings into fish ponds varies from 7000-1000 per hectare.
  • Silver carp, big head carp or Catla along with common carp are ideal for duck-fish farming.

e. Poultry-fish farming:

  • Fish provides fish meal, a protein rich poultry feed and poultry provides droppings which acts as fertilizers for fish pond.
  • Approximately, 1200-1500 poultry birds are enough to serve the fertilizer needs of one hectare of fish culture pond.
  • In general, 7000-10,000 fish are stocked in one hectare pond.

f. Dairy-fish farming:

  • 5-7 dairy cattle/buffalo rearing near one hectare fish pond is sufficient to fertilize it and also can give good remuneration prices.
  • The cattle dung would be utilized for the fertilization of fish pond and in return the humus from he ponds would give a good fertilizer for growing of fodder on the dikes.
