Essential of Genetic Control

  • Target pest must be key pest with substantial public health hazards
  • Ecology, biology and behavior of the pest should be clearly understood.
  • The pest should be liable to sterilize.
  • The sterilization technique should be economical for mass production and release without any deterioration in their behavior
  • Quality control producer are the key elements to the environment free of the other disturbance
  • Male and female should mix completely with natural population.

Advantage

  • No harm to plants and animals, no problem of developing resistance and no environment pollution.
  • The great advantage of using genetic control is that genetic trait existing in a population can be fully utilized for self-control
  • Public health scientists are keenly interested in the control of vector transmitting disease in addition to agricultural experts.
  • The technique covers large area or island the cost of the control is well justified in the long run.

Disadvantage

  • Initial cost of this technique is higher
  • The technique is not practicable against prolific, less economic and sporadic pest species
  • Well equipped lab facility is needed for mass production of the sterilized insect.
