Major issues of poultry production in Nepal

a) High Cost of Production:

  • Cost of Producing chicken meat is 28% lower in China and 18% less in India compared to Nepal.
  • Hence, Nepalese product can’t compete with products from neighboring countries.

b) Immune-Suppression and vaccination Failure:

  • In Year 2013/2014, there was outbreak of IBD in Nepal due to haphazard use of antibiotics in Poultry (Dr. Rupesh Shrestha, Regional Veterinary Laboratory, Pokhara).

c) Lack of Biosecurity:

  • Results to infectious bursal disease (IBD), New Castle disease (NCD) and Avian influenza (AI).
  • It results in more than 80% mortality of poultry.

d) Lack of well-equipped disease diagnostic lab:

  • There is only one poultry disease diagnosis lab named “National Avian Laboratory, Bharatpur” and is also not fully functional.
  • Department of Food technology and internal control is also functional only during period of festivals.

e) Overuse of Antibiotics and Antibiotics resistance.:

  • About 50% antibiotics are prescribed inappropriately (DDA Nepal, 2012).
  • About 71% of Veterinary drugs sale are sold without prescription of qualified registered veterinarian (Khatiwada, 2013)
  • This resulted in multidrug resistance in microbes to antibiotics.

f) No prioritization on Avian Research:

  • No clear-cut Policy for livestock development by government.
  • Absolute lack of research on breeding and reproduction.

g) Lack of Slaughter House and Processing Plant:

h) New Disease Challenge:

  • Ineffective control measures from government have resulted to major disease outbreaks in Nepal.

i) Unstable Market for Egg and Meat:

j) Trans-Border Poultry Trade:

  • Many Farmers are involved in illegal trade of poultry.

k) Lack of Commercialization.

l) Technical Problems:
