Major issues of poultry production in Nepal
a) High Cost of Production:
- Cost of Producing chicken meat is 28% lower in China and 18% less in India compared to Nepal.
- Hence, Nepalese product can’t compete with products from neighboring countries.
b) Immune-Suppression and vaccination Failure:
- In Year 2013/2014, there was outbreak of IBD in Nepal due to haphazard use of antibiotics in Poultry (Dr. Rupesh Shrestha, Regional Veterinary Laboratory, Pokhara).
c) Lack of Biosecurity:
- Results to infectious bursal disease (IBD), New Castle disease (NCD) and Avian influenza (AI).
- It results in more than 80% mortality of poultry.
d) Lack of well-equipped disease diagnostic lab:
- There is only one poultry disease diagnosis lab named “National Avian Laboratory, Bharatpur” and is also not fully functional.
- Department of Food technology and internal control is also functional only during period of festivals.
e) Overuse of Antibiotics and Antibiotics resistance.:
- About 50% antibiotics are prescribed inappropriately (DDA Nepal, 2012).
- About 71% of Veterinary drugs sale are sold without prescription of qualified registered veterinarian (Khatiwada, 2013)
- This resulted in multidrug resistance in microbes to antibiotics.
f) No prioritization on Avian Research:
- No clear-cut Policy for livestock development by government.
- Absolute lack of research on breeding and reproduction.

- Ineffective control measures from government have resulted to major disease outbreaks in Nepal.

- Many Farmers are involved in illegal trade of poultry.
k) Lack of Commercialization.
l) Technical Problems:
- Because of insufficient equipment and improper training to farmers.
m) Institutional, biological and socio-economic problem.:
