Facts about hatchability
- Hatchability refers to ratio of no. of chicks hatch to give no. of fertile eggs.
- Hatchability is reduced when temperature is >1000
- Can be improved by selection and breeding.
- Decreases with increasing age of chicks.
- Close breeding decreases hatchability while cross breeding increases hatchability.
Hatching egg collection and care
- In deep litter system, one hole for 4-5 hens at 18-20 weeks of age.
- Introduce male at 22 weeks of age @ 8 cocks/100 hens.
- Collect eggs from 25 weeks of age (48-50 g).
- Don’t store hatching egg for more than a week.
