Common terminologies in Poultry

Cock: Adult male poultry

Hen: Adult female poultry

Capon: Castrated cock. A cock whose testicles have been removed. The process is known as caponizaiton.

Pullet: Female bird of over one month and under 3 months

Cockerel: Male bird of over one month and under 3 months

Chick: Young immature poultry under one month.

Balanced Ration: The feed or combination of feeds that will supply the daily nutrient requirements of an animal

Bedding: Leaves or straw which is given to animals to lie on.

Breed: Animals having a common origin and characteristics that distinguish them from other groups within the same species.

Cannibalism: Consists of one pig or chicken biting the tail or other body parts of another.
