Common managerial Practices for Layers
a) Litter management:
- Cover the floor with 4 inches of dry litter.
- More litter is added at frequent interval until the litter is 6-10 inch deep.
- Should be done prior to cold weather.
- Litter should be stirred frequently during winter.
- Change the litter during spring season.
- Put 25 lbs of hydrated lime per 100 sq ft. floor space when litter is 4 inch deep.
b) Transfer of pullet to laying house:
- Thoroughly cleaned and disinfected before transferring the pullet.
- Move the pullet with little disturbance as possible.
- Prefer “All-in-all-out” system.
Advantages of “All-in-all-out” system.
- Farm has birds of only one age group.
- Decrease stress, control disease and reduce mortality by 4%.
- Rate of lay increased by 5%.
c) Placing of laying nest:
- Nest box is placed at least one month before the start of lay.
- To encourage the birds to lay eggs in boxes.
d) Light during laying period:
- Light affects the secretion of gonadotrophic hormone which influence reproductive behavior of birds.
- It also affects age of sexual maturity and rate of egg production.
- Light should be made available enough to read newspaper.
e) House temperature and ventilation control:
- 450C is desirable.
- Air forced circulation heating system is preferable in large room containing 1000 or more birds.
- Careful attention must be given during cold seasons to the adjustment of curtains, windows and ventilators.
- Install electrically operating fan to adjust fresh air or in removing CO2.
f) Humidity:
- Influences the health and egg production of the layer.
- Should be about 50%.
g) Nutrient requirement:
- Supply adequate energy, protein, mineral and vitamins.
h) Space requirement:
- As recommended.
