About Lesson

Brain stem

  • This is part of brain which connects spinal part.
  • Comprises of Midbrain, Pons and Medulla oblongata.

Midbrain:

  • Small area of brain which form < 1% of total brain.
  • Formed of four lobes collectively known as Corpora quadrigemina.
  • Anterior pairs called superior caniculus which control movement of eye and heat to locate objects.
  • Posterior pairs called inferior caniculus which control movement of ear and head to locate sound.
  • Two cranial nerve exit from midbrain.

Pons:

  • Part of hindbrain
  • It is solid mass that connect cerebral cortex to medulla oblongata and cerebellum.
  • Co-ordinates two sides of cerebral hemisphere
  • Regulates sleep, swallowing, facial expressions, etc.
  • Blood supply: pontine arteries, branches of basilar artery.

Medulla oblongata:

  • Posterior most part of brain
  • Control different involuntary activities like cardiac centre – control heartbeat, respiratory centre – control respiration, salivary centre – control salivation, etc
  • 4 cranial nerve exit from here
  • Blood supplies of medulla are anterior spinal artery and posterior inferior cerebellum.
