Selection of grass for lawn
I. Bermuda grass (Cynodon dactylon): It is commonly called as doob or Hariali or Bermuda grass. This is very commonly used for planting lawn due to its fast growth, can tolerate drought condition, hardiness, Regeneration capacity is very high (Good recuperation habit)., Trampling and troding resistant (wear and
Tear resistant), suitable for large scale planting, less water requirement, local (indigenous) types are more popular because they are salt tolerant and also stands well in poor soil, Chinese type (prickly) and Germany (more succulent) type are also popular.
II. Korean grass (Zoysia japonica): It is a native of Japan, Korea and Philippine islands. This grass is popular for its velvety growth, more cold tolerance, cushion like turf, suitable for small areas and house lawns, and not require frequent mowing. However, there some limitations with the use of this grass. They are: water requirement is comparatively more; it is tough grass thus slow establishment of lawn, limited use in sport ground. Other popular is Z. matrella (manilla grass).
III. Poa grass (Poa spp.): Suitable for making lawn in high hills i.e. temperate regions.
