Basic Components of Nursery
a. Nursery stock or mother stock unit:
- This is the area of nursery where the plants of high economic and aesthetic value are grown and maintained with almost core.
- Mother plants serve as the source material for the propagation and multiplication.
- Special attention must be paid to maintain the varietal characteristics and the genetic purity of the plants.
- Such source material must be healthy, free from disease and insect pests.
- Maintenance of the mother stock plants requires a good knowledge of the plant biology, their environmental and cultural requirements for their optimum growth and development.
b. Propagation block or unit:
- Modern well-established nurseries include a well-equipped propagation unit or the area for seeds, rooting, cuttings, grafting, and budding plants for further in containers
- The propagation unit of a nursery is generally equipped with facilities such as green houses, hot and cold frames, mist beds, seed beds, shade houses, lath houses and tissue culture laboratory.
- Area used for the rooting of the vegetative cuttings is equipped with mist beds to maintain high moisture content of the air.
b. Liner production unit (Hardening unit):
- Successfully propagated plants are transferred to the liner block where the growth factors are kept optimum for proper growth and development.
- In this block, the plants growth and reaches to optimum stage for sale. This block is also equipped with shade houses, plastic tunnels, lath house etc.
c. Growing units:
- The stock plants are transferred to the growing units after acclimatization in the liner block.
- Such plants are generally grown in the field with standard cultural practices.
- Normally, plants are maintained in outdoor growing field where they can grow naturally.
