Trade of medicinal plants from Nepal

• 7000 to 27000 tons are annual traded from Nepal (Olsen, 2005)
• Average annual export value during 2005-2014 Nrs 3934 million (Ghimire et al. 2015)
• DOF data 1175.3 tons traded in FY 2012/13 with the revenue of Nrs 11.3 million (except Louth salla, khoto, lokta, argeli, khayar)
• 50-100% of highland communities engaged in harvesting
• contribute 3-44% share of total family cash income
• Total volume of trade is almost same ca. 900 tons in 1991/92 to 875 tons in 2012/13 species differ
• most studies indicate >90% to India and rest to china and others
• An estimated 323,000-470,000 households (2.6 million people) are engaged in the collection of wild medicinal plants for sale in Nepal.
• survey of producers, traders and processors operating in the border of the country to the mid-western town of Nepalgunj revealed that 100 entrepreneurs handled 42 thousand tons of over 100 different NTFP/MAPS items equivalent to USD 26 million (Subedi, 1997)
• annual global market for medicinal plants based products are more than USD 60 billion which is growing at the rate of 7% per annum (Karki, 2000)
