About Lesson
Bacterial toxigenesis
- Toxigenesis the toxin producing ability of pathogen by which they cause disease.
- Cell associated toxins:- endotoxins
- Extra cellular diffusible toxins:- exotoxins
- Enterotoxins are water soluble protein exotoxin released by bacteria.
- Attacks the intestine of bacteria.
- Form pores in cell membrane and causes the cell to die.
Toxin protein of bacteria
- Clostridium tetani produces tetanus toxin.
- Corynebacterium diphtheriae produces the diphtheria toxin.
Clinical significance
- Enterotoxin effect on gastrointestinal tract cause vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal pain.
- Action of enterotoxin leads to increased chloride ion permeability of apical membrane of intestinal cells.
- Leads to secretary diarrhea within hours of ingestion.
