Management of Acid Soils
a. Liming
- Oxide form (CaO, MgO): Quicklime, highly reactive, caustic, difficult to handle.
- Carbonate form (CaCO₃, CaMg(CO₃)₂): Calcitic or dolomitic limestone, widely used.
- Hydroxide form (Ca(OH)₂, Mg(OH)₂): Hydrated lime, more effective but expensive.
b. Use of Basic Fertilizers
- Basic fertilizers like sodium nitrate and basic slag neutralize acidity.
c. Soil & Water Management
- Prevent leaching of bases and enhance organic matter decomposition.
d. Growing Acid-Tolerant Crops
- Highly acid tolerant crops: Rice, potato, sweet potato, oat, castor.
- Moderately acid tolerant crops: Barley, wheat, maize, turnip, brinjal.
- Slightly acid tolerant crops: Tomato, carrot, red clover.
