Introduction

  • The following species of legumes and grasses for different eco-regions of the kingdom have been made by Pandey (1997).

 

A. Species recommended on the basis of ecological zone:

a. Terai and hills

I. Legumes :

I. Summer: Cowpea, Joint vetch

ii. Winter: Berseem, Vetch

iii. Perennials: Centro, Siratro, Desmodium, Forage peanut, Stylo, Kudzu.

 

II. Grasses:

I. Summer: Teosinte, Bajra, Sudan, Maize

ii. Winter: Oat, Maize

iii. Perennial: Napier, Setario, Molasses grass, paspalum, Mulato, etc.

 

b. Mountains

I. Legumes

I. Summer: Cowpea, Velvet beans

ii. Winter: Lucerne

iii. Perennials: White clover, Red clover, Lotus.

 

II. Non-legume

I. Summer: Italian rye grass

ii. Winter: Brassica Spp.

iii. Perennials: Perennial rye grass, Cocksfoot.

 

B. Suitable species for introducing in the rangeland of Nepal

a. Terai and hills

I. Legume: Centro, Siratro, Desmodium, Stylo and Kudzu.

ii. Grasses: Napier, Setaria, Molasses.

 

b. Mountains

I. Legumes: White Clover, Red clover

ii. Grasses: Perennial Rye Grass, Cocks Foot
