Uses of levelling

Levelling is essential for various engineering purposes:

a) Fly Levelling: Used to transfer elevation from a known point to an unknown point. It is essentially the process of determining the elevation of a point with respect to a known elevation at some distance away.

b) Profile Levelling: This involves determining the variation of elevation along a line or alignment. It is particularly useful in designing roads and pipelines, providing a surface profile of the earth.

c) Cross-Section Levelling: Levelling done at right angles to the alignment to determine the vertical section of the earth’s surface. This is crucial for calculating cut and fill volumes in road design and construction.
