Types of silo

a. Tower silo:

  • It is cylindrical in shape made of brick, concrete cement and metal. Innerwall of the silo is smooth.
  • Silo should be strong enough to avoid cracking due to the lateral pressure.
  • It can be loaded by the help of loader or by using high capacity blower.
  • It is costly than other type of silo.

 

b. Horizontal silo:

  • It may be pit or trench or surface silo.
  • They are used for temporary storage either above the ground or below it.
  • Below the ground on lined trench has advantages i.e readily understandable for the farmers.
  • Spoilage of the silage and dry matter losses of the silage is 20-30%.

 

c. Pit silo:

  • Diameter of the pit silo is 2-3 m.
  • It is made for permanent use and bottom should be sealed.
  • It should be provided with a roof to protect from rain and sun. Roof may be of CGI sheet .
  • The site selection for the pit should be at that place where the water table is deep.

 

 

 

 

Filling and packing of silo

  • Chopped silage should be levelled spread and packed upto ground level.
  • It is necessary to avoid spoilage of the silage.

After packing it is covered with the dry paddy straw or saw dust up to 10cm depth.
