About Lesson
Working Principle of Four stroke engine
- All events are completed in four strokes of engine.
- Has valve for controlling inlet and outlet of exhaust gases.
- Opening and closing of valve is controlled by cams, fitted on camshaft.
- The camshaft is driven by crankshaft with the help of suitable gears.
- The camshaft runs at half the speed of crankshaft.
Events in IC Engine
- Air (Charge) is taken in cylinder.
- Charge is compressed in cylinder by the piston.
- If charge is only air, the fuel is injected at the end of compression.
- The charge is ignited at a predetermined time under specified pressure inside the cylinder.
- The power developed is transferred to the crankshaft through the connecting rod.
- Exhaust gas go out the cylinder at a regular interval.
