Working Principle of Four stroke engine

  • All events are completed in four strokes of engine.
  • Has valve for controlling inlet and outlet of exhaust gases.
  • Opening and closing of valve is controlled by cams, fitted on camshaft.
  • The camshaft is driven by crankshaft with the help of suitable gears.
  • The camshaft runs at half the speed of crankshaft.

Events in IC Engine

  • Air (Charge) is taken in cylinder.
  • Charge is compressed in cylinder by the piston.
  • If charge is only air, the fuel is injected at the end of compression.
  • The charge is ignited at a predetermined time under specified pressure inside the cylinder.
  • The power developed is transferred to the crankshaft through the connecting rod.
  • Exhaust gas go out the cylinder at a regular interval.
