Introduction

  • Term coined by Auguste Comte.
  • Competition: Opposing one another to attain the goal only one can entertain.
  • Conflict: Eliminating opponent to reach a goal.
  • Accommodation: Developing working agreement between conflicting group.

Types of Family

A) Family based on authority:

a) Equalitarian family:

  • Husband and wife exercise a more or less equal amount of authority.

 

b) Matricentric family:

  • In absence of father, mother get a dominant position in the family.

 

B) Family based on descent:

a) Patrilineal descent:

  • Person with a group of relatives who are related to him through father.

 

b) Matrilineal descent:

  • Person with a group of relatives who are related to him through mother.

 

C) Based on residence:

a) Patrilocal (Sasurali ma jane):

  • Lives near domicile of the parents of bridegroom.

 

b) Matrilocal (Ghar jwai):

  • Lives near the domicile of the parents of Bride.

 

c) Bilocal :

  • Gives choice of staying with either the groom parent or bride parents.

 

d) Neolocal:

  • Lives near maternal uncle of the groom or bride.

 

e) Avuneulocal:

  • Lives near the uncle of the groom.
