A. Monosaccharide:
On the basis of functional group:
- Aldose: Ribose, Glyceraldehyde
- Ketose: Fructose, Ribulose
On the basis of number of carbons in molecules
- Diose: Glycolic aldehyde
- Triose: Glyceraldehyde, Dihydroxy acetone
- Tetroses: Erythrose
- Pentose: Ribose, Ribulose
- Hexose: Glucose, Fructose, Galactose
- Heptose: Sedoheptulose
B. Oligosaccharide
- 2 Monosaccharide: Maltose, Sucrose
- 3 Monosaccharide: Raffinose
- 4 Monosaccharide: Stachyose
- 5 Monosaccharide: Verbascose
C. Polysaccharide:
- Homo: Starch, Cellulose
- Hetero: Pectin, Hemicellulose
Note: reducing sugar includes Glucose, Fructose, lactose, Maltose and Cellobiose.
- Unbranched polymer: Amylose
- Highly branched polymer: Amylopectin
- Branched polymer: Glycogen
- Linear polymer: Cellulose
