Terminology related to cattle and Buffalo

  1. Breed:
  • Developed by efforts of man.
  • Have common ancestry
  • Possess similar morphological, physiological and economic traits.

 

  1. Buller: A cow apparently always in heat, estrus, also known as Nymphomania.

3.Bullock or steer: Castrated male ox of over two years.

  1. Down calver: Dry but pregnant cow
  2. Dry cow: Cow that is not producing milk.
  3. Dry period: Non lactating days between lactations.
  4. Heifer: Young female cattle that hasn’t given birth
  5. Maiden heifer: Adult female that hasn’t been allowed to breed
  6. Open animal : A female animal that hasn’t breed.
  7. Slink calves: Calf that has been taken out from the womb of Pregnant cow .
  8. Springer: Term used for female cattle showing signs of advanced pregnancy.
  9. Stud bull: Bull that is used for breeding purpose.
  10. Yearling: Calf aged 1 to 2 years.
