Terminology related to cattle and Buffalo

1. Breed:

• Developed by efforts of man.
• Have common ancestry
• Possess similar morphological, physiological and economic traits.

2. Buller: A cow apparently always in heat, estrus, also known as Nymphomania.

3.Bullock or steer: Castrated male ox of over two years.

4. Down calver: Dry but pregnant cow
5. Dry cow: Cow that is not producing milk.
6. Dry period: Non lactating days between lactations.
7. Heifer: Young female cattle that hasn’t given birth
8. Maiden heifer: Adult female that hasn’t been allowed to breed
9. Open animal : A female animal that hasn’t breed.
10. Slink calves: Calf that has been taken out from the womb of Pregnant cow .
11. Springer: Term used for female cattle showing signs of advanced pregnancy.
12. Stud bull: Bull that is used for breeding purpose.
13. Yearling: Calf aged 1 to 2 years.
