Techniques in Urea Treatment of Straw:

  • First, 100 kg of straw are spread over floor or circular board of 2 m.
  • Then 4 kg urea is dissolved in 50 l water and sprayed over layered straw on floor.
  • Urea solution and straw are then mixed thoroughly with hand fork (about 5-6 turning)
  • Then mixed straw are stacked inside plastic sheet (gunny bag) with airtight cover to have anerobic condition.
  • It is then left for 3 weeks to react.
  • After 3 weeks, they are taken out of stack and 2-3 turnings is given so that excess ammonia gets evaporated in atmosphere.
  • Color of straw will change from yellowish to dark brown. Treated straw is now ready to use.

Precaution in Feeding of Treated Straw:

  • It is introduced slowly to animals with smaller amount fed at first day and then increases gradually.
  • Calf below 6 months of age should not be fed with treated straw.
  • Pregnant cattle should not be fed with treated straw.
  • Treated straw are fed after exposure of air for at least 10 minute.

Amount to be fed:

  • Dry cow/buffalo = 5-6 kg daily
  • Lactating cow/buffalo = 4-5 kg daily
