Storage of hay:

  1. Loose hay:
  • It is generally prepared by sun cure method.
  • Hay are stored in loose form, for local use.
  • It can be stored in open environment or in barn.
  • In open environment, hay can be stored in following ways:
    • Hay stack on ground
    • Hay stack on platform
    • Hay stack on tree
  1. Chopped hay:
  • In some places, hay is chopped before use.
  • Chopped hay are then stored in seal tight containers or sack.
  1. Baled hay:
  • Bailing process makes the compact cubical bundle of forages.
  • It may be then stored in open environment or in barn.
  • It reduces the requirement of space in comparison to loose or chopped hay.
  1. Wafers:
  • Hay are chopped into 3-5 cm length.
  • They are then compressed in the wafering machine.
  1. Briquette:
  • Hay are compressed in briquetting machine.
  • It requires lesser space.
  1. Pellets:
  • The compressed product of hay after grinding is known as pellets.
  • These are cylindrical compact masses of hay.
  • Pelleting reduces feeding loss and storage space.
