About Lesson

Oat (Avena sativa):

  • It is non-leguminous annual fodder crop (cereal crop)
  • It is grown in tropical to temperate geographical region

Climate and altitude:

  • It can be cultivated from tropical to temperate climatic condition.
  • Best production is obtained at 20-30°C.
  • It can be grown from Terai to Hills (59m-2000m asl).

Soil:

  • It can be grown in all soils.
  • Well-drained loamy soil rich in organic matter are suitable.

Land preparation:

  • 6-8 ploughing is done to obtain fine soil.
  • Field should be weed free.

Seed rate: 100-120 kg/ha

Sowing season: Aswin-Mangsir

Method of sowing:

  • Line sowing; space of 25-30 cm between rows.
  • Depth; 3-4 cm, deeper sowing has less germination

Fertilizer dose:

  • NPK- 80-120:30:30
  • First half dose of nitrogen and full dose of P are applied at time of sowing
  • Remaining half dose of nitrogen are applied 30-40 days after sowing.

Irrigation:

  • 2 irrigations should be given at 25-28 days’ interval from sowing.

Harvesting time:

  • After 2 month of sowing.
  • 3 cut can be obtained, if irrigation facility is available.

Production:

  • Green fodder: 30-45 MT/ha
  • Seed production: 1200-2000 kg/ha
