Advantages of silage:

  • It is less at risk from weather.
  • It retains higher proportion of nutrient than hay. It preserves 85% of feed energy.
  • Crop can be preserved as silage more cheaply, more quickly and with less labor.
  • It requires less storage space.
  • Risk of fire is avoided.
  • Any forage crops are fit for ensiling.
  • It is palatable and slightly laxative.
  • It is a better source of protein and carotene than hay.

Disadvantages of silage:

  • Transportation problem is generally experienced in silage than that of hay.
  • Permanent structure for preparing silage is required.
  • Wastage may be high due to affluent losses or if not prepared properly.
  • Poorly prepared silage is not accepted by animals.
