Advantages of silage:
- It is less at risk from weather.
- It retains higher proportion of nutrient than hay. It preserves 85% of feed energy.
- Crop can be preserved as silage more cheaply, more quickly and with less labor.
- It requires less storage space.
- Risk of fire is avoided.
- Any forage crops are fit for ensiling.
- It is palatable and slightly laxative.
- It is a better source of protein and carotene than hay.
Disadvantages of silage:
- Transportation problem is generally experienced in silage than that of hay.
- Permanent structure for preparing silage is required.
- Wastage may be high due to affluent losses or if not prepared properly.
- Poorly prepared silage is not accepted by animals.
