Few terminologies

Cropping scheme : Plan according to which crops are raised on individual plots over a period of time.

Ratton cropping: Regrowth of crop after harvest. Eg: Sugarcane

Relay cropping : Sowing crop on the same field when the main crop starts flowering.

Fertilizer use efficiency: Yield upon 1 kg fertilizer input.

Horizontal resistance: Increased area under crop.

Vertical expansion: Increased yield per unit area under crop.

Annidation: Complementary interaction which occurs both in space and time.

Crop logging: Method in which nutritional demand of a crop are decided by regular analysis of plant tissue.

Leghemoglobin : Pink pigment in the root nodule of leguminous roots.

Stover: Dried straw of crop after harvesting.

Shattering: Longitudinal or transverse splitting of seeds

Pseudocereals: Eg: Buckwheat and Amaranthus

Heliophytes (Sun loving): Eg: Rice and maize.

Soiling crop : Grown to harvest and feed the cattle directly. Eg: Oat, berseem, Napier

Smoother crops: Grown to suppress the growth of weeds. Eg: Buckwheat, Cow pea.

Soil fertility : Capacity of soil to provide nutrients to crop.  

Soil productivity : Capacity of soil to produce maximum yield under given conditions
