Management of Acid Soils

a. Liming

  • Oxide form (CaO, MgO): Quicklime, highly reactive, caustic, difficult to handle.
  • Carbonate form (CaCO₃, CaMg(CO₃)₂): Calcitic or dolomitic limestone, widely used.
  • Hydroxide form (Ca(OH)₂, Mg(OH)₂): Hydrated lime, more effective but expensive.

b. Use of Basic Fertilizers

  • Basic fertilizers like sodium nitrate and basic slag neutralize acidity.

c. Soil & Water Management

  • Prevent leaching of bases and enhance organic matter decomposition.

d. Growing Acid-Tolerant Crops

  • Highly acid tolerant crops: Rice, potato, sweet potato, oat, castor.
  • Moderately acid tolerant crops: Barley, wheat, maize, turnip, brinjal.
  • Slightly acid tolerant crops: Tomato, carrot, red clover.
