Factors affecting weathering of rocks and minerals

a. Climatic Factors

  • Controls rate & nature of weathering.
  • Under arid regions, physical weathering is dominant (rocks & minerals break into small particles, no/little chemical change)

b. Physical characteristics of soil

  • Firmly cemented & dense Quartzite & sandstone weather slowly due to their small surface area for chemical reaction.
  • Soft & porous volcanic ash & limestone easily decompose-small surface area.

c. Chemical characteristics of soil

  • Gypsum/calcite soluble easily in H2CO3 & are easily removed from the PM.
  • Ferro magnesium minerals (Olivine & biotite) weather easily since ions are not tightly packed in the mineral crystal structure & iron is easily oxidizable.
  • Weathering resistance order of some of the common minerals are:

      Quartzite (most resistant)>muscovite & K feldspar>Na/Ca

Feldspars>Biotite /hornblende/ augite> olivine>dolomite/calcite>gypsum (least resistant minerals)
