Inbreeding

  • The process of mating among individuals that are closely related is known as inbreeding.
  • When the individuals are closely related, the degree of inbreeding is high.
  • The self-fertilization in peas and beans are example of inbreeding and fertilizing population also known as purelines because they breed true type without appreciable genetic variation.
  • It leads to decrease in heterozygosity and increase in homozygosity.
  • Inbreeding depression may be defined as the reduction or loss in vigor and fertility as a result of inbreeding.

Note:

  1. Inbreeding coefficient:
  • The measurement used for the probability that two gene in a zygote are identical by descend is known as inbreeding coefficient and is denoted by F.
  • Rate of fixation of allele is known as inbreeding coefficient.

  1. Panmictic index:
  • A measure of the relative amount of random mating heterozygosity that is diminished by inbreeding coefficient.
